I have seen at the iPad and it dose not do anything my current hardware can't. That being said, for some things it a much richer user experience and form factor. It does extend the functionality over conventional books and magazines such as imbedded HTML/photo/video/animation (enlarged thumbnail, video how to, interview with the author, short video clip in a kids book... ) Chilling with the daily mail/spam review and a bit of web surfing could be more relaxed. I can't even begin to consider the iPhone screen adequate for web access IMHO.

I do some baking but little cooking outside the microwave. My wife however has better skills (thankfully). Check out the Epicurious iPad app. video on this apple page. http://www.apple.com/ipad/apps-for-ipad/ I think it is really a neat utility with some great features. I would never have considered bringing my MacBook pro into the kitchen LOL.

I suspect the iPad will surprise us as creative apps are developed which tickle our individual wants (not needs).

For me, I looked at iTap VNC which could facilitate a connection to a "headless Mini" at my telescope. The mini can provide all the scope and camera control while the wifi iPad might serve as a portable screen to control the Mac apps. Currently I need a laptop outside to wifi remote desktop or screen share from my (warmer) desktop machine. In addition to the remote control, could see focusing the camera using the iPad as an upgrade to my more static laptop.

I doubt any single use will drive the platform but if a variety of things are now possible and/or better this niche could grow.

Now, maybe the wife will really need the Epicurious app. (:^))

Best wishes,
John B.
